# Competitor Deep-Dive: Clio

**Date: July 18, 2026** · Companion to the Housecall Pro deep-dive (doc 13). Compiled from notes/clio-research.md.

Clio (Themis Solutions, Vancouver BC, founded 2008) is the market-leading cloud legal practice management platform: Clio Manage (PM), Clio Grow (intake/CRM), Clio Draft (doc automation, ex-Lawyaw), Clio Accounting, Clio Payments, Clio Duo/"Manage AI", Clio File (e-filing), plus the 2025 layer (Vincent by Clio, Clio Work, Clio Library, Clio Docket, Clio Operate). It is the direct incumbent Trackmint's Legal pack sells against.

## What this means for Trackmint

**Clio is the $5B gorilla — and its soft spots are exactly Trackmint's pillars.** After a $900M Series F at $3B (2024), the $1B vLex acquisition, and a $500M Series G at $5B (Nov 2025), Clio serves 150,000+ legal professionals at ~$500M ARR. Yet the recurring complaints against it map one-to-one onto what Trackmint is built around:

- **Task management is "basic."** Lawyerist calls it Clio Manage's main weakness; G2 reviewers cite a "lack of basic task systems." There is **no task-level Kanban** in Manage (Matter Stages is a matter-pipeline board, Advanced tier only; Grow's Kanban is intake-only and doesn't sync with Manage tasks), **no workload/capacity views, no sprints**. Firms literally bolt Legalboards and Dendri on top of Clio to get boards. Trackmint's Basic tier — boards, assignment, workload — is the thing Clio's own customers pay third parties for.
- **Bankruptcy forms are delegated, not owned.** Clio's own bankruptcy page says form filing happens "manually or via one of Clio's 150+ integrations" and points to NextChapter for Ch 7/13 petitions. Clio Draft covers state, local, and USCIS forms — not federal bankruptcy packages. Trackmint's AI doc-scan → Ch 7/13 wedge attacks a hole Clio has publicly chosen not to fill.
- **Price stacking is the #1 complaint** — key features gated to Advanced/Expand, then Grow, Draft, Accounting, and AI all sold separately; true cost runs ~+70% over list, with reports of auto-renewed unused licenses and billing after cancellation. Same lesson as Housecall Pro (doc 13): Trackmint's published, workflow-shaped tiers are a positioning weapon, not just pricing.

**Its moats show what compounds — and what Trackmint should sequence toward.** Clio wins on time+billing ("cut billing from a whole day to two hours"), embedded payments processing "billions annually" (cards 2.95%, ACH 1%, Affirm-style Pay Later 4.95%), the largest ecosystem (250-300+ integrations, open API, 100+ bar association endorsements), and since 2025 the vLex/Vincent AI-research moat. The pattern: tracking features attract, but **payments and ecosystem are what lock in**. Trackmint's Mid tier (time → budgets → invoicing → payments) is the same compounding path, entered from the tracking side Clio is weak on.

**The real but incomplete threat: Clio is moving toward Trackmint's Advanced tier.** Two products are the closest approach to "AI doc scanning → official forms":

- **Clio Draft** (from $49/mo) fills "thousands of state, local, and USCIS forms" with AI Word→template conversion and questionnaires — form-filling as a product, but questionnaire-driven, not scan-driven, and with no bankruptcy coverage.
- **Clio File** (Oct 2023) is real court e-filing inside Manage with **AI Autofill** that pre-fills filing forms from your document — the closest thing anywhere to Trackmint's "AI reads your documents and fills the official form." But it is live in **only three states** (California, Texas, Georgia) and scoped to e-filing, not petition preparation.

Together they prove demand and validate the mechanism while leaving the bankruptcy-petition ground uncontested. Trackmint should assume Clio extends both — the window is the gap between "AI Autofill for e-filing in 3 states" and "scan a shoebox of client documents into a complete Ch 7 package."

**One correction to keep honest:** unlike MyCase and PracticePanther, **Clio does have matter budgets** (with bill reminders and approval workflows). "No budget warnings" is a valid complaint against PracticePanther (see GC-05's cross-reference) but not against Clio — Trackmint's budget story versus Clio is about *live projection and board integration*, not existence.

## Features worth adopting

Each rated **Adopt-now** (current tiers), **Adopt-later** (roadmap), or **Skip**, judged for Trackmint's personas (lawyers full fit; devs and contractors where noted).

| Feature (Clio) | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Matter budgets (budget per matter, feeding billing) | **Adopt-now** (already core) | Trackmint's B5 budget bars are this; Clio having it while MyCase/PracticePanther don't confirms it's table stakes at the top of the market — Trackmint differentiates by putting live projections on the board, not by merely having budgets. |
| Court-rules deadline engine (~1,000 US jurisdictions, auto deadline chains) | **Adopt-later** | Genuinely valuable and hard to replicate (licensed rules data, constant updates); ship the Legal pack with bankruptcy-specific deadline chains first, and buy or license broad court-rules data only when the Legal pack has traction. |
| Text-to-pay | **Adopt-now** | A payment link by SMS/portal message is small to build once invoicing exists, measurably speeds collection, and fits all three personas — Clio gates it to Essentials+, another gate not to copy. |
| Payment plans / Affirm-style "Pay Later" financing | **Adopt-later** | Clio's 4.95% Pay Later (client installments, firm paid upfront) is the legal twin of Housecall Pro's Wisetack — one financing partnership can serve the Legal and GC packs; sequence after core payments. |
| Matter Stages pipeline (visual matter board) | **Adopt-now** (already core) | This is Clio's cramped, Advanced-gated imitation of what Trackmint's board *is*; Trackmint should name this in positioning — full task Kanban plus workload in the Basic tier versus a matter-pipeline view at $109/user/mo. |
| Bill approval workflows (draft → review → approve → send) | **Adopt-later** | Matters for multi-lawyer firms and dev consultancies where a partner reviews invoices; irrelevant to solos, so it arrives when Trackmint courts 5+ seat teams. |
| Client portal + dedicated client app (Clio for Clients) | **Adopt-now** (portal) / **Adopt-later** (native app) | Trackmint's portal (free portal users, per PM9) already carries approvals and payments; a dedicated client mobile app is polish for later — Clio shows clients actually use it for messaging, docs, and paying. |
| AI matter summaries (Duo: summarize matter, draft comms, extract deadlines) | **Adopt-later** | "Summarize this matter/job/project" over Trackmint's own data is a natural extension of the existing AI pipeline and cheap relative to its delight — but the document→form pipeline is the wedge and must stay first in line. |
| E-filing (Clio File) | **Skip** (for now) | Court integrations are state-by-state plumbing that took Clio years to reach three states; Trackmint's value ends at a filing-ready, validated document package — revisit only if the Legal pack wins and users demand the last mile. |

**Pattern to steal:** Clio monetizes trust — bar endorsements, trust/IOLTA compliance, court-stamped copies auto-saved. In regulated professions, compliance features *are* growth features. Trackmint's equivalents (statutory lien-waiver wording, versioned wage determinations, validated petition output) should be marketed as loudly as the boards.

- Gap: Grow workflows and Manage tasks **don't sync directly** (2b1inc)

### Task management
- Tasks, lists/templates, assignments; automated workflows Advanced+. Repeatedly reviewed as **"basic"** (Lawyerist main weakness; G2 "lack of basic task systems"). No workload/capacity or sprint views.

### Calendaring & court rules
- Firm/matter calendars, Outlook/Google sync; **Court Rules engine ~1,000 US jurisdictions** auto-calculating deadline chains (clio.com bankruptcy page)

### Time & billing
- Multiple running timers (web/mobile), time entry anywhere, expenses, UTBMS/**LEDES**, batch billing, **split billing + multi-currency (Advanced+)**, contingency/flat/hourly, billing plans, **matter budgets**, bill reminders, approval workflows

### Trust/IOLTA + Clio Accounting
- Native trust ledgers/requests/reconciliation controls. **Clio Accounting** (2024, US-only add-on): GL, bank feeds, trust reconciliation — young; many firms keep QuickBooks ($30-235/mo extra)

### Documents — Clio Draft (ex-Lawyaw)
- Unlimited storage; templates (Essentials+); Draft add-on: AI Word→template conversion, **fillable court-form libraries: "thousands of state, local, and USCIS forms"** (50 states + federal + immigration), AI questionnaires, e-sign; "from $49/month". 2025: Draft AI.
- **Bankruptcy NOT covered natively**: Clio's own bankruptcy page says form filing is "manually or via one of Clio's 150+ integrations" — points to **NextChapter** for Ch 7/13 petitions. Draft = state/local + USCIS forms, not federal bankruptcy packages.

### eSignature / Portal
- Native e-sig (EasyStart limited to 3; unlimited higher); **Clio for Clients** portal + mobile app (messaging, docs, payment)

### AI
- **Clio Duo** (GPT-4, GA Oct 2024; → "Manage AI" 2025): matter summaries, doc analysis, drafted comms/billing narratives, deadline extraction→calendar, expense logging, firm Q&A. Scoped to your Manage data. Add-on, Essentials+ required; ~$49-59/user/mo (third-party estimates).
- **Post-vLex (Nov 2025)**: **Vincent by Clio** (enterprise legal AI over 1B+ docs, 110 jurisdictions), Vincent Studio (no-code AI workflows), Vincent Drafting, **Clio Work** ("from $49/mo", includes Clio Library = vLex+Fastcase), **Clio Docket**.

### 2025-26 products (ClioCon)
Clio Work, Manage/Grow/Draft AI, Vincent + Studio + Drafting, Library, Docket, **Clio Operate** (enterprise work mgmt, from Mar 2025 ShareDo acquisition), Clio Capital, Pay Later. Positioning: "Intelligent Legal Work Platform."

## 2. Weaknesses / absences

- **Kanban in Manage**: only Matter Stages (Advanced+, matter-pipeline not task Kanban) or Grow intake pipeline. Firms bolt on **Legalboards, Dendri** ("agile practice management" on top of Clio), Kanban Tool via Zapier.
- **No workload/capacity views, no sprints** — task management "basic."
- **No AI doc-scan → bankruptcy Ch 7/13 filling.** Explicitly delegated to NextChapter et al.
- **Accounting incomplete** — "missing payroll… reliable financial reporting"; QBO still needed.
- Grow↔Manage disconnect; doc automation shallow for high-volume (→ Gavel/Knackly); limited report customization; e-filing only 3 states.

## 3. Pricing (2025-26, USD/user/mo)

| Plan | Annual | Monthly | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| EasyStart | $39 | $49 | time/billing/docs, 3 e-sigs |
| Essentials | $79 | $89 | portal, templates, custom fields, 300+ integrations, text-to-pay |
| Advanced | $109 | $119 | Matter Stages, workflows, split billing, custom reports |
| Complete → "Expand" | $139 | $149 | + Grow, website builder |

Add-ons: Manage AI ~$49-59/user/mo (est., contact sales); Grow standalone $59/user/mo; Draft "from $49/mo"; Work "from $49/mo"; Accounting contact-sales; Payments 2.95%/1%/4.95%. Realistic: solo Essentials+QBO ≈ $150-175/mo; costbench estimates true cost ~+70% over list for 25-user firm.

## 4. Scale & position

- **Series F Jul 2024: $900M at $3B** (NEA); ARR >$200M then, EBITDA-positive, 1,100+ employees (TechCrunch)
- **Nov 2025: $1B vLex acquisition completed + $500M Series G at $5B** (NEA, TCV, Goldman, Sixth Street; +$350M debt Blackstone/Blue Owl)
- ARR ~$433M end-2025 → ~$500M Apr 2026, ~36% YoY (Sacra estimate)
- 150,000+ legal professionals, 130+ countries, 100+ bar associations
- Clear #1 cloud LPM. MyCase = closest (simpler/cheaper); PracticePanther small-firm; Smokeball doc-automation niche; TR/LexisNexis enterprise. Only Clio spans SMB→enterprise + research AI + fintech.

## 5. Top complaints (G2 4.6/996 · Capterra 4.7/1,737)

1. **Price/tier creep & add-on stacking** — key features gated Advanced/Expand; Grow, Draft, Accounting, AI all extra
2. **Hidden total cost** — consultants $200-300/hr, ~+70% over list, auto-renewal of unused licenses, continued-billing-after-cancel reports
3. **Weak task management** — "lack of basic task systems"
4. **Reporting rigidity** — "very confusing and limiting especially in billing"
5. **Accounting gaps** — payroll missing, QBO still needed
6. **Bugs/sync** — "document system stops working entirely every few weeks"; integrations break
7. **Setup burden** — "task list took us about 2 weeks to set up"
8. **Grow↔Manage disconnect**
9. **Doc automation too shallow for high-volume firms**
10. **Underutilization** — "attorneys loaded up with Clio features but really only use time and billing"

## 6. Most praised (why it leads)

- Time+billing ("cut billing from a whole day to two hours"); all-in-one intake→invoice; ease of use, cloud+mobile; largest ecosystem (250-300+ apps, open API, bar endorsements, embedded payments); support & trust compliance; since 2025 the vLex/Vincent AI+research moat.

**Strategic takeaways for Trackmint**: Clio's soft spots = task/workload management (no capacity views, no task Kanban, no sprints), bankruptcy form automation (delegated to NextChapter), report flexibility, add-on price stacking. Its moats = billing/payments, ecosystem, vLex AI.
