Competitor Deep-Dive: MyCase (8am MyCase)
July 18, 2026
What This Means for Trackmint
MyCase confirms the same pattern we have seen across every legal PM competitor: a strong billing/payments/all-in-one core, but no native Kanban boards (visual boards require the third-party Legalboards integration), no workload or capacity views, and no matter budgets. There is also no AI form-filling for bankruptcy Chapter 7/13 — MyCase’s own bankruptcy page offers only generic practice management, and form automation within the 8am family lives exclusively in Docketwise, which covers immigration only. Their 8am IQ AI suite summarizes and drafts text but does not populate official court forms, leaving the doc-to-form gap wide open. The recent price creep to $50/$100/$130 per user/month, with heavy feature gating across tiers, directly echoes the complaint themes we catalogued in the user-complaints research. MyCase’s genuine strength — LawPay payment rails included at every tier with next-day deposits — reinforces the payments-included strategy already in Trackmint’s plan. Net: Trackmint’s differentiators (native boards, budgets, workload views, AI doc→official forms, transparent pricing) remain undefended by MyCase.
MyCase (8am MyCase) — Deep Research Notes
Compiled 2026-07-18. All prices/features verified against live pages on this date unless noted.
1. Full Feature List by Area
Case / Matter Management
- Centralized case files: documents, contacts, notes, emails, tasks, events, time/billing per matter; case status tracking and “Case Analytics” performance insights (https://www.mycase.com/features/)
- Conflict-check tracking (Advanced tier only) and Open API (Advanced tier only) (https://www.mycase.com/pricing/)
- Workflow automation: “Automate the creation of tasks, events, and documents” — template-driven task/event chains triggered on case stage. Notably linear automation; reviewers note it “lacks conditional rules” (https://www.practicepanther.com/comparison/mycase/)
Contacts / CRM & Lead Intake
- Built-in legal CRM + customizable online intake forms with prospect-to-case-file conversion; intake forms/CRM are Pro tier and up
- Lawyerist criticism: “Lack of automation in the Leads section” — no automated follow-up sequences (https://lawyerist.com/reviews/law-practice-management-software/mycase/)
- Deep intake ecosystem via integrations: Lawmatics, Intaker, Smith.ai, Ruby, LEX Reception, Lawbrokr
Task Management
- Tasks with assignees, priorities, due dates, linked to cases; task lists and reminders; tasks auto-generated by workflows
- No native Kanban board. Kanban/visual boards come only via the third-party Legalboards integration (https://www.mycase.com/blog/general/mycase-and-legalboards-integration-visualize-your-case-management-and-automate-task-workflows/; https://legalboards.com/how-works-mycase-integration/)
Calendaring
- Firm-wide and per-case calendars, automated deadline reminders; 2-way sync with Google Calendar and Outlook
- Court-rules-based deadline calculation only via LawToolBox integration (https://www.mycase.com/solutions/bankruptcy-law-software/)
Time Tracking & Timers
- Built-in timers, time entry from anywhere in app, expense tracking, billable-hours reporting; “passive time tracking automatically captures every billable minute” claim
- Third-party auto-capture integrations: Billables AI, Time Miner, TimeSentry AI, VXT, Tempello
Billing / Invoicing
- Batch invoice generation, recurring invoices/payment plans, flat fee/hourly/contingency billing; “premium billing” and split billing gated to Pro/Advanced
- LEDES: yes — LEDES 1998B only, Pro/Advanced tiers; won’t generate a LEDES file if invoice has a balance forward; codes not editable during invoice creation (https://supportcenter.mycase.com/en/articles/9369990-ledes-billing)
Payments
- Native payments run through sibling LawPay (“no monthly fee, competitive processing rates”); next-day deposits; ABA/IOLTA-compliant; client legal-fee financing (“Pay Later”)
Trust / IOLTA Accounting
- Trust accounting (ledgers, requests) included from Basic tier; full MyCase Accounting module (three-way IOLTA reconciliation, firm books) is a $39/user/mo add-on
- Bookkeeper review: “trust accounting reports in MyCase are more basic than what you will find in platforms like Clio or CosmoLex” (https://www.accountingatelier.com/blog/mycase-accounting-review)
Expenses / Budgets
- Expense tracking tied to cases/invoices: yes
- Matter/case budgets: no evidence of any native budget feature (Clio has matter budgets; MyCase does not advertise one)
Document Management, Templates & Automation
- Unlimited document storage (all tiers); document generation with merge-field templates (Pro); Advanced Document Automation and Desktop Drive for PC & Mac (Advanced tier)
- Lawyerist: document management is “basic”; file-size limits on video/audio uploads
eSignature
- Built-in, unlimited eSignature included in Pro and up
Client Portal
- Secure portal for messages, documents, invoices/payments, task updates; Basic tier gets only a “limited client portal”
Texting
- Native 2-way text messaging + chat + call log, Pro tier and up
AI — “MyCase IQ,” now rebranded 8am IQ (mid-2026)
Per https://lawyerist.com/reviews/artificial-intelligence-in-law-firms/mycase-iq-review-artificial-intelligence-for-lawyers/ and https://www.mycase.com/blog/general/mycase-iq-legal-ai/: - 8am IQ Writing Assistant (Pro): edits, rephrases, changes tone, translates, summarizes text - Document/Discovery Assistant with OCR (Advanced): extracts and summarizes key info from stored/discovery documents - 8am IQ Case Assistant (Advanced): natural-language Q&A across case data - Roadmap: AI task/event generation, firm-wide search, data-driven insights - Built on OpenAI’s API; outputs “should be reviewed before use.” NOT a legal research tool; only usable inside MyCase.
Reporting
- Customizable reporting from Basic; “premium reporting” and financial dashboards on Pro+. A top user complaint area.
Integrations (~70+ claimed; 56 listed)
QuickBooks Online, Zapier, Dropbox, NetDocuments, Gmail/Google Calendar, Outlook, Mailchimp, CallRail, Scorpion, InfoTrack (eFiling), CourtDrive, LawToolBox, Legalboards (Kanban), Case Status, Lawmatics, Smith.ai, Ruby, AI partners (Briefpoint, Clearbrief, Supio, Practice AI, Second Chair, Legalyze.ai), medical-records vendors (Arctrieval, YoCierge, Quilia). - 8am siblings: native Docketwise↔︎MyCase integration (immigration forms in Docketwise, PM in MyCase); LawPay embedded as payments layer; CasePeer parallel PI product.
Mobile Apps
- iOS/Android: case access, documents, messaging, time entry; per Lawyerist, mobile apps restricted to Pro/Advanced tiers. G2 reviewers say apps lag the web version badly.
2. What MyCase Does NOT Have
| Gap | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Sprint/agile boards, native Kanban | No native board view; Kanban requires Legalboards third-party integration |
| Workload / capacity views | Nothing in feature set or help center; reporting called “very limited” |
| AI document scanning that fills official court forms (bankruptcy Ch 7/13) | Absent. MyCase’s own bankruptcy solutions page offers only generic PM (templates, portal, LawToolBox deadlines, InfoTrack eFiling) — no petition prep, no schedules, no means-test calc, no Best Case/Jubilee/NextChapter integration. 8am IQ summarizes/drafts; it does not populate official forms. Form-filling in the 8am family lives in Docketwise (immigration only) |
| Project/matter budgets | No budget feature advertised anywhere |
| Conditional/branching workflow automation | Workflows are linear task/event chains |
| Legal research / caselaw AI | 8am IQ explicitly not designed for it |
| Other | LEDES 1998B only; document-only custom tags; email integration pain; mobile app missing timekeeping/calendaring of web |
3. Current Pricing (verified mycase.com/pricing, July 18, 2026)
| Tier | Annual (per user/mo) | Monthly | Key gates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $50 | $60 | Cases, contacts, time, invoicing, trust accounting, LawPay payments (next-day deposits), custom reporting, unlimited storage, limited client portal |
| Pro (most popular) | $100 | $120 | + unlimited eSignature & doc generation, workflow automation, intake forms + CRM, 2-way texting, premium billing & reporting (LEDES), 8am IQ Writing Assistant, 70+ integrations |
| Advanced | $130 | $150 | + 8am IQ Case & Discovery Assistants (OCR), advanced document automation, Desktop Drive, conflict checks, split billing, open API |
| Add-ons | MyCase Accounting $39/user/mo; LawPay no monthly fee; 10-day free trial |
Caveat: reflects a recent price increase — as late as April–June 2026 listings showed $39/$89/$109 annual; PracticePanther cites “two price increases in two years.”
4. Target Market & Position Within 8am / AffiniPay
- Target: solo to mid-sized firms (~1–50 users) wanting affordable, easy all-in-one; strongest in consumer/general practice — family, criminal, PI, estate, bankruptcy-as-PM, small litigation
- Corporate: AffiniPay rebranded as “8am” on Aug 19, 2025, unifying 8am LawPay, 8am MyCase, 8am CasePeer (PI), 8am Docketwise (immigration + forms), 8am CPACharge, 8am ClientPay. 217% revenue growth over 3 years, 250k+ professionals served (https://www.lawnext.com/2025/08/affinipay-parent-to-lawpay-mycase-and-others-rebrands-as-8am-to-signify-its-evolution-into-a-unified-professional-services-platform.html)
- Strategy: compete with Clio Essentials/Grow and PracticePanther on price + all-in-one payments; not aimed at midlaw/biglaw.
5. Top Recurring User Complaints (2023–2026)
- Price creep / paywalled features — “The prices have gone up so that’s a negative feeling towards the software now”; “add ons are being built into the subscription fee…driving up the cost” (Capterra, G2)
- Weak/inflexible reporting — “The reporting features are very limited and basic things like creating a custom shareable report appear impossible” (Capterra)
- Email integration pain — “a lot of issues with emailing from MyCase and issues when trying to link an email from Microsoft Outlook” (Capterra); G2 theme (19 reviews) about removal of email integration
- Outdated mobile apps — “iPhone and iPad apps really need an update—they’re badly out of date”; app lacks timekeeping, messaging, calendaring of web (G2)
- Billing/statement confusion — “billing software is hard to understand at first and still is”; 26 G2 reviews on tedious manual invoicing
- Support wait times — 25 G2 reviews on long response times (sentiment split; some praise)
- Payment-processor lock-in — “I can not use the merchant services provider I want because they don’t integrate with MyCase” (Capterra)
- Trust/IOLTA rough edges — “IOLTA management is needing some simplicity”; trust reports “more basic than Clio or CosmoLex” (Accounting Atelier)
- QuickBooks sync cleanup — “more manual cleanup with MyCase-to-QBO than with Clio’s integration” (Accounting Atelier)
- Automation/lead gaps & media limits — no lead follow-up automation; video/audio upload limits; workflow setup learning curve (Lawyerist)
6. Head-to-Head: MyCase vs PracticePanther
Ratings: Capterra — PracticePanther 4.7/5 (528) vs MyCase 4.6/5 (807); ease of use 4.6/4.6; support 4.6/4.6; PP edges functionality 4.5 vs 4.4. G2: 8am MyCase 4.4/5 (389).
PracticePanther stronger on: conditional multi-step workflow automation on all tiers (MyCase linear, tier-gated); CRM/lead follow-up sequences; unlimited custom tags (MyCase document-only); top-tier sticker price ($89 vs $100/$130).
MyCase stronger on: document management & automation (Advanced Document Automation + unlimited built-in eSignature); shipping AI suite (8am IQ Writing/Case/Discovery); payments (LawPay rails, next-day deposits, client financing vs PantherPayments ~5-day eChecks); native accounting add-on with three-way trust reconciliation; bigger integration ecosystem + 8am family; entry-tier breadth ($50 includes trust accounting + payments).
Consensus: “Small firms wanting simple, affordable case management should choose MyCase. Firms needing deeper workflow automation should choose PracticePanther” (Big Mode Consulting). Neither offers agile/Kanban-native task views, capacity planning, matter budgets, or court-form (bankruptcy Ch 7/13) generation.
